Networking During the Holidays

As a career advisor, I have learned that one of the most important times to network is during the holiday season because there are many opportunities to connect with others. Connecting with family, friends, co-workers and other job-hunters and talking about your career aspirations can be a great way to get ideas for where you may want to work or to learn more about a specific industry.

Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your networking opportunities at holiday gatherings:

Find Networking Opportunities at Family Gatherings

Family gatherings are often overlooked networking opportunities. It is important to mention that you are attending college and what your planned next steps will be after graduation. Many times we don’t use this networking opportunity because it is a familiar place with familiar faces. However, mentioning to relatives – whether they live in- or out-of-state – that you are seeking a position within a particular industry may uncover a much-needed connection for you.

Start Networking at Community Events

Taking part in school, church and community functions around the holidays will put you in a position to make great < strong >networking contacts strong >. Many employers do not hire during the holidays, but at the beginning of the year, companies look at their budgets to expand or create positions which will support their objectives. So, be prepared by networking and making those connections during the holidays.

Volunteer with Your Favorite Charity

There are a lot of charitable and non-profit organizations that need extra people who want to help others during this time of year. Through volunteering and sharing your time and talents with your community, you can make some great connections.

Attend a Professional Holiday Mixer

In addition to attending your company holiday party, you can also check out local event websites to find other < strong >professional parties and mixers strong > open to the public (www.eventbrite.com and www.meetup.com are a couple of good sites). Many companies will hold these events as a way to reach out and promote conversation in the community. Your local Chamber of Commerce may throw a holiday event for multiple businesses in multiple industries – make sure to have business cards or another convenient way to exchange contact information.

Finally, relax and enjoy this time of the year when people are being generous. The best gift could be a great referral at a great company, and ultimately a dream career in your field.

Remember, networking and meeting others do not have to be painful or intimidating. Connecting with others around us can provide the key to uncovering some of the best opportunities out there!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season!
